Cantons exist within FBiH, not throughout BiH
Germany · Länder
Similar: Cantons and German Länder have their own legislative institutions and constitutionally defined powers.
Different: German Länder are units directly within Germany’s federation and participate in the Bundesrat through their governments. Cantons are inside one BiH entity, FBiH; RS has no cantons, and cantonal assemblies elect delegates to the FBiH House of Peoples.

United States · States
Similar: Both involve territorial levels of government with their own legislative powers.
Different: U.S. states have equal representation in the Senate. Cantons are not direct constituent units of the state of BiH and do not each have two national senators: they are within FBiH, while the other entity, RS, has no cantonal level.

Assemblies and governments of the ten cantons
Germany · Land parliament and government; Bavaria as an example
Similar: Cantons and German Länder have elected legislatures and governments that need parliamentary support.
Different: In the cantons the assembly speaker nominates a prime minister candidate after consulting the deputy speakers, and the assembly confirms the proposed government; cantonal assemblies also elect FBiH House of Peoples delegates. In Bavaria the Landtag elects the Minister-President; German Land governments, not parliaments, appoint Bundesrat members.
